Day Five

So managed to get through all the first set of videos and build the level, wasn't ever going to be too complex because there's no scripting in it but good nonetheless. Opened a new project file and accidently saved over the one with all my work in it - GENIUS FINLAY you muppet!

FORTUNEATELY I had just taken some video captures of me playing in the level so I have some proof that I did do the work :P.

I'll uploads these in a bit then update the blog later tonight when I've made more progress with my work :)

*NOTE - its Day 6 and I will upload these vids for Day 5 because they were done on Day 5 so I will do them when im not killing the latency for Alec's WOW palying :P

Also I did actually find my level again - I had saved a new blank scene in the project so when I opened it up it opened the blank scene - not the one with all my work in it. Glad :D

Day Four

So the days feel like they're tumbling now that I'm keeping a record of the progress.

Today I've tossed around a few ideas of what questions to ask the designers in my interviews and its getting tricky now, this part I feel I should have put more thought into earlier but I have such a strong belief that my project is worthwhile that I'm certain there's good detailed juicy questions out there that really will put some of the designers on the spot! Although I won't release what few questions I currently have down at the moment I will do them more like this time next week (after my 2nd meeting with Iain) so I have a better quality of what I have down :).

As well as that I've restarted the unity vids, so I'm on video 39!!!!!!!!!! WOO!. Good progress I feel there and I certainly feel like what I'm doing is sticking in my head which is always re-assuring. So i've gone over, terrain creation, weather effects, shaders, lightmapping, importing/exporting, messing around with the player controller and a host of other things. Dead happy. Just need Maya 2011 on my computer at home and I'll be sorted!

Apart from that getting up early to see Andy Murray's semi final and with djokovic beating federer in the other semi it is very promising indeed, so I will sign off here - come on andy!

Day Three

Unfortunately due to the lack of work done in these two days i've had to amalgamate them into one blog which is something I was hoping to avoid. I was hoping that each day would justify its own amount of work and that I would remember and hence get into a habit of blogging my work on a daily basis - ah well, learn and move on I guess. (IGNORE THIS PARAGRAPH - actually didnt need to join two blogs together in the end!)

Really annoyed with Autdoesks website, really annoyed. Trying to get my hands on the free copy of Maya 2011 and it just won't let me login, dead frustrating because my unity tutorials vids progression got to a point where I needed to use Maya and make a few models to import into unity, i have Maya 2008 on my PC and theres a graphic error on it which makes it dead irritating to texture! Seeing as the uni also has Maya 2011 I thought I might was well get the copy so if I did modelling either at home or uni then I wouldnt have any issues with old new versions etc. OF COURSE I could just get some free models etc and use them but in my ever lasting quest in doing things 'right' I'm determined to make my own models to practice Maya since its so long I used it!

ANYWAY! thats a pain and i'm kinda stuck in limbo at the moment so going to tear myself away from the unity vids for the moment and try do bits of other work which is frustrating because I was on such a role and i'm really enjoying those vids.

Going to now think about designer interview questions and game critiques for my dissertation work....

Day Two

So today consisted of meeting Iain (my supervisor) and furthering Dare team search, oh and more of those unity vids!

So step 1 was really the furthering the dare search, chatted with rory (programmer) today and he said he might think about it this week, so gonna keep looking but if he says aye then i'm half way there!

Spoke with Iain, he seemed to like my project idea in general but has highlighted its the broken down details of my overall question that will be important to establish so i can make effective interviews - Good point! So over the next few days I'll be trying to detail up those questions and make a draft copy to present at my next meeting in a week's time, this is a must do! Mainly because time is of the essence.

I have 2 designers from Tag, one ex RTW, one ruffian and one cohort so its a good start but I'll see if I can add to this list.

Finally, been cracking on with the Unity vids, I've literally just stopped for the night as its currently (checks watch) 11.45ish. Onto importing Models from Maya now - will probably create a few dead simple new Maya models this week so I can import them into my scene and continue with the vids.

Football tomorrow, target - Hat-trick ;)

Day One...

So here it begins, today has been pretty easy day, i dont mean that in terms of the complexity being low but it has been pretty steady. I met with Manby and Fabiene earlier in the day for out Unity session, we didn't end up doing much but I did share out the tutorial vids that I had downloaded via 3D Buzz (thanks to Fabiene!). Managed to give them a bash as well, got through about 15 of them! More on that later

Had a good chat with Manby about Dare as well, was interesting getting an insight into what the experience was like (in a view to applying this year myself) which I don't really feel is communicated much by previous Dare teams, unless you happen to know them!

So yeah with that in mind I recalled a previous conversation about Marnie fishing to see if I'm doing a Dare team so I think she is pretty up for doing Dare 2011 which is good - one artist check! Now I want to have two artists and two programmers so that leaves me with 3 team members to find so the search will continue tomorrow!
Marnie may ask Rory (programmer) but he will likely busy but worth a check nonetheless. A sense of momentum is gathering then. I was also deciding how I can maximise my usefulness for the team too, Audio, Unity, making promo vids, schedules (+ general producer stuff) and any other miscellaneous tasks that I will be capable of, be it a bit of Prop Modelling etc.

I've come up with 6 very basic game concepts that I feel have a potential to become realized at some point, hopefully I'll have another few in time for pitching to my potential team! So I will have to keep going with that.

Studentlink - sigh. Its not going to happen while at Uni which is a shame - it will get made hopefully for the start of the next year so that should be fun, just wished it could be here now to help me find a Dare team! haha

What else? Unity Tutorials. Yes that was it. I had a 'butcher's at them tonight and one overall thing smacked me in the face was - HOPE. It's always very daunting learning new software particularly game releated software but Unity just seems so easy to grasp, the videos are dead easy to follow and I am determined to give them all a look over so I have a good idea how to use it for Dare and my project.

I really see Unity as a potential to be my 'selling point', so getting a REALLY good grasp on it is of utmost importance at the moment....

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS

FTOF!
